Hope punk — what a funny name for a genre. I have Ross and Laura’s TOP TEN reads of 2024 playing and seemingly Becky Chambers’ Monk & Robot duology is an example of hope punk. They make it sound well worth reading—and that’s the problem with BookTube: it makes me want to read EVERYTHING. Does anyone else feel that? That was why I stopped listening to The Incomparable podcast book episodes, and also to the Rich Roll Podcast. I want to read ALL THE BOOKS. Although had I not been listening to Rich Roll, I wouldn’t have bought and read Anna Lembke’s book that I mentioned in today’s pages, Dopamine Nation.
I’m making a conscious effort not to buy every book that sounds good and also to slow down with the books I am reading. My default speed for audiobooks now is 1.2x. It was 2x last year. I want to slow down, and even reread books I finished recently and chapters of books I’m currently reading. It’s a challenge, because all these ‘book goals’ trackers and social-media posts make it about quantity.
Anyway, today’s pages. Let’s get to that.
